How It All Began in 1990:

No district can boast such diversity. Here, workers and employees, artists and merchants, lawyers and architects, housewives and saleswomen, Mozambicans and Iraqis, Indians and Ghanaians, students and doctors all live side by side. This wide range of Neustadt’s colors gave the city’s first neighborhood festival, the Bunte Republik Neustadt (BRN), its extraordinary flair.

House communities that rediscovered and opened their courtyards, pubs that responded spontaneously and creatively, associations that enlivened the streets, schools that wanted to participate, children who sold their trinkets, fire brigades that showcased themselves… this is how a festival was born, with the core idea of “constructively protesting against speculation, arbitrariness, and ruthless commercialization.” Since then, time has not stood still in the Outer Neustadt. Many former residents now run pubs, shops, clubs, galleries, offices, and other projects here.

Neustadt life represents a different kind of quality of life. Here, time seems to move faster. No evenings with the streets deserted by nightfall!
